IPC-Methodenworkshop

Questions of Space in Research
with Dr. Nirmal Puwar, Goldsmiths, University of London

Dates, Times, and Location of the Workshop
The workshop will take place on Thursday, May 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in IPC room 2702 on the 27th floor of the AfE tower.

Die Arbeitssprache des Workshops ist Englisch.

Aim
This workshop will explore how research is always a double engagement with space; from the perspective of both the researcher and the researched. It will encourage us to consider how knowledge is embodied. The creative methods available to us in research exchanges, as well as the places we take ourselves to will be opened up for reflexive modes of enquiry. How questions of gender and race interlace research travels and placements will feature in this discussion. As will the position of the researcher as space invader and creative impostor.

The workshop will be organized in the form of a methods lab. Students will be expected to have engaged with the reading and to have used this to reflect on their own research practices and conundrums. It is anticipated the workshop will offer new directions as well as help students to analytically discuss difficult moments.

The day will consist of:

·           An introductory lecture on the spatial dimensions of research

·           Group discussion of the key themes in the set reading

·           Student reflections on their own research journeys

·           A consideration of creative directions in research

IPC-Methodenworkshop

Standardisierte Befragungen.
mit Dr. Michel C. Mbida, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M.

IPC-Methodenworkshop

Transnational Migration as Social Reality and Research Perspective: Introduction and Project Consultation
mit Kyoko Shinozaki, Ph.D., Goethe University Frankfurt a.M.

Dates, Times, and Location of the Workshop
The workshop will take place on Friday, July 6, and Friday, July 13, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in IPC room 2702 on the 27th floor of the AfE tower.

Die Arbeitssprache des Workshops ist Englisch.

Aim
Social, economic, political and cultural connectivity crossing nation state borders fundamentally affects our lives. This workshop focuses on this vibrant field within migration studies, transnationalism, both as social reality and research perspective. On the one hand, new communication technologies and cheap transportations have facilitated simultaneous lives of many migrants (social realities). On the other hand, transnationalism is also a conceptual tool that can render such practices visible and redresses a normative view on migration as a linear process (research perspective). The workshop will explore theoretical as well as methodological issues arising from studying migrants who forge and maintain ties and relationships in multiple localities across national borders.

This workshop is participant-oriented and will be organized in two sessions. The first day will consist of an introduction to the thematic field that includes theoretical discussion (pros and cons, critical assessment of the transnational perspective) and methodological issues. The second day will consist of research presentations from participants on their PhD projects. The presentations will be discussed by all the participants in relation to both thematic as well as methodological issues.
